November 21, 2005
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa
President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri
Lanka.
Presidential Secretariat,
Colombo-01.
Your Excellency,
I write this to express heartiest
congratulations on my behalf and on behalf of the
All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, the Council of Muslim
Theologians, to Your Excellency for being blessed
to be the 5th Executive President of Democratic
Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama was
highly impressed by the gesture of goodwill reflected
in Your Excellency’s maiden speech, as the
President, that “Interference in religious
activities is not the business of the Government”,
which caused the Muslim Community to breathe a sigh
of relief, since the concerns over some potential
political interference in its religious rights lingered
on for some time.
It is the well known fact that
from time immemorial, the Muslim Community of this
country has remained loyal to all successive governments
as patriotic citizens, no matter which political
party they were backing during the elections.
It was just as well that Your Excellency
also announced in the very first speech to the nation
that you, from the time you were sworn into the
top office, do not belong to any political party
or ethnic group and would like to serve as the custodian
of the justice rather than the Executive President.
We strongly believe that you would commit yourself
to keeping your pledges.
All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama assures
Your Excellency of its fullest co-operation and
undertakes the onus to lead the Muslim Community
towards the path that ensures peace, happiness and
prosperity for this Country.
Faithfully yours,
Ash-Shaikh H. Abdul Nazar
General Secretary,
All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama
